2013 Season Review After posting a 7-9 mark in 2012, expectations were pretty high entering Greg Schiano' second season in charge of the Buccaneers. An aggressive off-season had seen the premier cornerback in the NFL, Darrelle Revis, arrived in a trade and sign deal with the New York Jets and the secondary was further boosted by the free agency signing of Dashon Goldson and the drafting of cornerback Johnthan Banks. There were still question marks about Josh Freeman at quarterback after a pair of poor performances at the tail end of 2012 and these fears escalated after some off-field issues involving missing team meetings and a poor pre-season performance. Kicker Connor Barth was lost for the season due to a knee injury sustained in a charity basketball game and an outbreak of MRSA closed the locker room and led to two players being sidelined for the year. Tough and narrow losses in the opening two games was followed by a more comprehensive one in New England and Freeman was duly benched in favour of rookie 3rd round pick Mike Glennon. A week later and Freeman was released, an ignominous end to what had looked two years earlier to be a seriously promising career in the NFL. The losses continued and the pressure on Greg Schiano continued to mount until at 0-8, a Monday Night win over a Miami team in similar off-season disarray brought some temporary relief to the situation. This was actually the start of a streak of four wins in five games but the overall problems sustained by the 32nd ranked offense continued to worsen. Injuries had seen the top two tailbacks, Doug Martin and Mike James, the second receiver, Mike Williams, and nearly every tight end on the depth chart all placed on IR. There were good game management performances from Glennon, veteran Vincent Jackson continued to excel and unheralded Tim Wright and Bobby Rainey came from nowhere to become offensive leaders. But the clamour for change amongst the fan base and media grew louder by the week as the 4-12 campaign came to an end and the day after a season-ending loss in New Orleans, both Greg Schiano and GM Mark Dominik were released from their contracts.
