Now comes the most contraversial selection on the roster, the starting quarterback. First of all, Baker Mayfield has not done enough to by-pass Brad Johnson for the No.3 spot and it sums up the franchise that neither of the first overall selections would come anywhere close to being considered. But Doug over Tom? It comes down to what Doug Williams meant to the turnaround of the franchise in the early days. Yes Brady won a Super Bowl with the Bucs but you have to throw out all previous exploits and passing numbers cannot be compared. So on this roster, the GOAT will wear the baseball cap backwards on the sideline behind the real best No.12 Buccaneer. STARTER - DOUG WILLIAMS Became the first franchise quarterback of the Buccaneers when he was selected in the first round in 1978 and started for five seasons leading the Bucs to the playoffs in three of those years. Left the Bucs in 1983 after a bitter contract dispute and spent three seasons playing in the USFL but returned to the NFL in 1987 and became Super Bowl MVP in leading the Redskins to a 42-10 victory over Denver. Had two separate spells in the Buccaneer front office and also coached at Grambling and for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe. Was inducted into the Bucs' Ring of Honor in 2015. BACK-UP - TOM BRADY Spent three seasons with the Buccaneers after his Hall of Fame 20-year run with the New England Patriots and regarded as the Greatest of All Time to play the position in the NFL. Started every game for the Bucs and set an NFL record for completions in the 2022 season after leading the league in yards and touchdowns in 2021 when he made his 15th Pro Bowl. Was the MVP of the Buccaneers' Super Bowl victory. Announced his retirement in January 2023. BACK-UP - BRAD JOHNSON Spent four seasons with the Bucs and led them to the Super Bowl victory over Oakland. Started for three seasons but gave way a month into the 2004 campaign. Joined the Bucs in April 2001 as an unrestricted free agent after spending two seasons with the Washington Redskins. Played in the 2003 Pro Bowl and also came to the UK with the Bucs for the International Series game, where he played QB with British fans. HONORABLE MENTIONS Another great season for Baker would give thought to him making the third spot. Anyone seriously suggesting the likes of Jeff Garcia or Jameis Winston needs to give their head a wobble.
