No other position in franchise history has had such a plethora of talent to choose from with many long-serving and excellent performers
for the Buccaneers. Although the two starters are pretty obvious, the depth made the selection process an interesting one with one of
the possibles, Randy Grimes, being selected at his other position of guard. Recent Buccaneer fans will only know Ryan Jensen but
Mayberry’s near-decade-long run at the position and two Pro Bowls earns him the starting role.
STARTER - TONY MAYBERRY
Spent nine seasons as the Bucs' starting center having succeeded Randy Grimes at the position in 1991.
Finally received NFL recognition with two Pro Bowl berths before he retired in 1999 having not been
offered a contract by the Bucs after they had signed Jeff Christy. Started his first ever game in the NFL
when Grimes was hurt in 1990 and played as a back-up for the rest of that season. Became the starter
the following year and did not miss a start for the rest of his career.
BACK-UP - RYAN JENSEN
Announced his retirement in February 2024 having missed
two straight seasons through injury. Did return to start the
2022 Wild Card game against the Cowboys but was
seriously restricted. Had been an ever-present starter on
the offensive line for the previous four seasons, 63 of them at center with two starts at left
guard in the middle of the 2020 season. Was the undoubted team leader on the line with
a feisty attitude. Arrived in Tampa Bay as a big money free agent in March 2018 having
originally spent five seasons with the Ravens after being a sixth-round pick (203rd overall)
in the 2013 NFL Draft.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Just so many from Steve Wilson to Randy Grimes, John Wade to Jeff Faine. You can then also consider Super Bowl winner Jeff Christy
who came to the Bucs at the end of a long NFL career.
