Terry Schmidt's 32-yard scoring interception return four minutes into the fourth quarter sent the Bucs to a frustrating loss at Soldier Field in Week 2 of the 1983 season. After Bill Capece had given the Bucs an early lead despite having first and goal at the Bear 1-yard line, Walter Payton took a short swing pass from Jim McMahon and raced 73 yards down the sideline for a score. Tampa tied the score in the third quarter when Jerry Golsteyn hit TE Jimmie Giles at the Bear one-yard line and James Owens scored on the next play. Gerald Carter led the Bucs with six receptions for 98 yards.
