Trailing 21-6 in the third quarter, the Bucs mounted a furious comeback that was completed on Bill Capece's game-winning fieldgoal with 27 seconds remaining. The Bucs drove 74 yards late in the third quarter for Doug Williams' three-yard run and after a strong defensive stand, only had to drive 28 yards for Williams to hit James Owens with 13 minutes left in the game. Three times after, the Bucs drove into Detroit territory for the apparent winning score but two turnovers and a punt curtailed those drives. The final drive was kept alive after Detroit's Bobby Watkins was called for pass interference on 3rd and 20 from the Tampa 45-yard line.
