Baker Mayfield says Buccaneers' win over Jets was ‘personal'
Baker Mayfield said "a lot of stuff was personal" in the Bucs' 29-27 win against the New York Jets. Speaking to reporters postgame, Mayfield singled out Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers after they fired Matt Rhule in 2022. Mayfield began that year as the Panthers' starter, but was later released in Week 12 as Wilks turned to PJ Walker instead.

"Their D-coordinator (Steve Wilks) was the one that cut me in Carolina, so a lot of stuff was personal today," Mayfield said. "Haason Reddick, former Jet, a lot of people."

Reddick missed the first six games of the 2024 season with the Jets amid a contract holdout. When he did return, he posted his least productive season since becoming a first-round pick in 2017. The Bucs signed the edge rusher to a one-year deal in the offseason. He had three tackles, including one for a loss, in Sunday's win.

The Buccaneers are 3-0, and each of their wins has come from a go-ahead scoring drive in the final minute. The Jets put up 17 points in the fourth quarter to rally on Sunday, but Tampa Bay kicker Chase McLaughlin put the Bucs back in the lead with a 36-yard field goal as time expired.

"Resiliant group, we stick together," Mayfield said of the Bucs' late-game heroics. "When one phase is a little bit down, others got to pick it up and be there for you. That's what this team's all about. We support each other no matter what."

Mayfield completed 19 of 29 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown Sunday and also ran four times for 44 yards.
