The biggest collapse ever
Busch Stadium, St.Louis
8 November 1987

The background

Ray Perkins' team stood at 4-3 (thanks to a 2-1 mark from the strike squad) and were leading the St.Louis Cardinals 28-3 in front of a minimal crowd at Busch Stadium in St.Louis. The Cardinals would move to Phoenix at the end of that season.

And then two minutes into the final quarter, the Cardinals scored a touchdown and began a 28-point comeback that just stunned the Bucs who would up losing every game the rest of that season. Fumbles, missed opportunities - you name it, the 87 Bucs had it from the start of the final quarter onwards.

The game situation
Trailing 31-28 after Neil Lomax had hit JT Smith with the go-ahead touchdown at the 1:01 mark, QB Steve DeBerg led the Bucs downfield on one last drive to salvage overtime. He got them into position at the Cardinal 36-yard line and out came the Bucs' Nigerian kicker, Donald Igwebuike to attempt a 53-yard fieldgoal as time expired. His kick hit the crossbar and with it went the Bucs' 1987 season.
