The successful Hail Mary
Soldier Field
29 November 1998

The background
The Bucs really under-achieved during the 1998 season coming off their play-off appearance the previous year. All the expectation and the disruption from the opening of the new stadium took its toll, and they spent the whole year trying in vain to play catch-up in their division.

They finished the year at 8-8 and lost out on a Wild Card berth to the Cardinals, but at the end of November in Chicago, they were still in hope of the post-season and just trying to win any way they could.

The game situation
It was the last play of the first half and the score was tied at 14-14. Trent Dilfer rolled right and threw in the general direction of the endzone (insert your own gag here). Bert Emanuel got his hands on the pass but couldn't hang on (same here) and it deflected to Brice Hunter who caught it for his one and only NFL touchdown. The Bucs went on to win 31-17 to complete a sweep of the Bears on the season.
