It's ruled incomplete
Raymond James Stadium
7 January 2006

The background
The Bucs had won the NFC South Division title and their reward was a Wild Card game at home to the Washington Redskins. Chris SImms' diving TD has already been featured earlier in this countdown but this play deals with how close the Bucs came to tying the score late on.

The key play was a pass to Edell Shepherd, a little-used wide receiver who had seen time with the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe. And just as the 1999 playoff loss to the Rams had a pass ruled incomplete by video replay, so this one would too.

The game situation
Brian Kelly had given the Bucs hope with an interception of Mark Brunell and Tampa took over at the Redskin 35-yard line. On 3rd and 10 with just over three minutes left, Chris Simms threw deep for Edell Shepherd who looked to have caught the tying touchdown. But after video review, it was ruled incomplete as on the field, and the Bucs never came close to scoring again.
