Never quit on a play
Tampa Stadium
18 September 1988

The background
Right from Pee-Wee football, defenders are taught to never stop until the whistle blows. And even in the NFL, sometimes they get caught out.

The best Buccaneer example of this came in 1988 during a game against the then-Phoenix Cardinals. This is a play which makes highlight reels and NFL blooper programmes to this day.

Lars Tate was a touchdown scoring machine during his two years in Tampa Bay but most of them came from short yardage. This was a short yardage play but one that resulted in a 47-yard touchdown run.

Alas it did not help the Bucs to victory thanks to a late Cliff Stoudt to Jay Novacek pass, but remains a definite contender for best Buc blooper ever.

The game situation
The Bucs had 3rd & 1 at the Cardinal 47-yard line and Tate went over the top for the first down. But his knee never hit the ground so the play was still live and Tate continued all the way for a score.
