Gary Woollard reports on bad news from Tampa
Some sad/bad news from Tampa - Damon’s sports bar at the Radisson Harbor Bay Inn has closed. It has been replaced by a restaurant called Crabby Bill’s.
No more late night drinking and watching the screens after a night on the town. I loved that place.
But I’m told that Crabby Bill’s has outside tables overlooking the old Tampa Bay, volleyball courts & jet skis. When I get back from a night out in Tampa or a game at the Ray Jay and it’s pitch dark, the very last things I'll need are (a) an outside table ( b) a game of volleyball ( c) a ride round the bay on a jet ski. I’m only 42 but my dad is 74 and I think he requires these three items even less than me.
Not to mention the ribs have now been replaced by crab’s legs. Is nothing sacred these days? All we need now is to find out LeeRoy's has been replaced by Tanya Harding's ice skating-themed restaurant for lesbian veggies.
I have also done something I said I would never do (no it’s not buying a round). I have reluctantly agreed to take my dad to a baseball game. We are going to see the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play the Kansas City Royals at the St.Pete Dome on the 20th September. I don't know the first thing about baseball & from what I can see the Devil Rays are pretty crap. Still it reminds me of my first visit to see the Bucs play in 89.
Editorial comment - Damon's Ribs was a pretty good place but was nowhere near as good as Selmon's which is why we recommend the site to all Bucs UK members on tour (even those Fulham-supporting herberts who turn up there in Scottish Claymore shirts). The one question I have (and I don't think I want to know the answer) - how did Crabby Billl get his nickname?
