Can Jon Gruden Rebuild the Bucs?
Let's face it even if we make the playoffs this season has been a huge let down. What separates a great coach from a coach of dynasties is the ability to rebuild a team. So the question of which category Jon Gruden belongs in will be answered in the upcoming seasons.

There is no doubt that Gruden is a great coach with the ability to reach epic status, he is the youngest coach in the league and will have to break the mold of a one season wonder, to be ranked with Bill Walsh and Jimmy Johnson of the modern era. One thing is for sure; bringing in a team of old age pensioner’s ala his Raiders team is not the way to go.

First let's look at the upcoming off-season, we already know that Keyshawn’s gone, and that Sapp is likely to follow, we don’t have a marquee running-back no matter how much we believe Thomas Jones could be. We now have no GM, so what is the answer?

Let us look at the positives, we have finished paying our ransom for Gruden and have a first round pick in this years draft, which could easily be used for a punishing running back or a wide receiver. Unfortunately last years draft devastated the defensive tackle crop so help may not be likely from this area. Also this year’s free agency market is strong, even though the Buc’s will probably be contributing the marquee players in Keyshawn and probably Sapp.

But there is one interesting player likely to be a free agent Terrell Owens; do we dare swap Mouth for Mouth? Or let me put it another way do we have the money to swap mouth for mouth. In simple terms we have committed $76.7 million of next years cap already, the cap will be set at around $79 million. And to make matters worse we have sacrificed probably the one man at One Buc Place who understood the cap system! Things don’t look good.

I have to agree with Lee Bromfield, when he says that our priority has to be to get a new General Manager. Important decisions have to be made do we save cap room and ditch Brad Johnson in favour of Chris Simms, who is supposedly our Quarterback of the future? Do we draft in some new talent to replace the tired legs of Roman Oben and the incompetent legs of Kenyatta Walker? Do we finally get someone who can return kicks?

Our team is only getting older with our starters at Quarterback, Running back and Wide Receiver having a combined age of 126 years of age. Compared to our division rivals the Bucs are an old team, with the Saints, the Panthers and the Falcons checking in at, 110 years, 115 years and 90 years respectively.

What is the answer? I don’t know. I do think though that the Bucs can take some lesson form the other kind of Football from our country. As Sir Alex Ferguson who is not very well liked is very successful at rebuilding teams and has done so at Manchester United, the result over a decade of dominance in English Football. Maybe Malcolm Glazer can use his shareholder abilities and arrange a phone call between Alex and Chuckie! Just a thought!
