Front Office Football
For those of you out there who like gridiron game action, then you have probably got copies of Madden 2009, 2008, 2007 etc all over the living room. I personally thought Madden 1967 was the best - the one with Gale Sayers on the cover.

But when it comes to football simulation games, the best one ever made is back on the market. Front Office Football.
Long-time Bucs UK members will remember a feature I ran on the original game back in 2001. And how it could seriously damage your health by you playing it so much that your partner would inflict grievous bodily harm for doing so.
There is no graphical action in FOF. No button A for this, button B for that, and button J that you control with your knob to make the receiver run out of bounds. This is just controlling everything but the on-game action.
You take control of an NFL franchise at the outset of the 2008 season. And then it is down to you how much you run from there. Play as a GM and do all the player signings, contract renewals, drafting etc.
Or you can play as a head coach and call every play on offense or defense during a game and make strategy decisions to that level throughout a season.
To me, this is the ultimate fan's game - taking over the Buccaneers and running it the way you want. In a recent game, I traded early on for David Carr to get me through 2008 until I could draft a top notch young QB. And as I sit five weeks into 2009, I've been able to acquire Anthony Gonzalez from Indianapolis and Courtland Finnegan from Tennessee to bolster areas of weakness on my roster.

In drafting, you get to interview 60 potential picks to ascertain their true potential. And there is nothing so frustrating as watching the selections almost reach you at No.26 and see the receiver you think you've got a steal on, go with the 25th pick - bloody Cowboys.
And you soon get a real understanding for the NFL Salary Cap as you negotiate contract extensions and try and lower the cap hit for each player as you re-negotiate through their careers.
The game is not available in shops or from Amazon or Play.com - you download it directly from Solecismic Software. It costs $29.95 which works out to around £20 at current exchange rates and is worth every penny and a lot more besides.
Steve Careford, my former colleague at Extra Point is another FOF die-hard and we have both run previous versions for some 20-25 years to build up huge histories of our franchises. You can change names and teams at your will, and take this game to the nth degree.
Look, just buy it! You won't regret it.
