Evans’ season ends early with ejection

The season ended a little earlier than planned for Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans, who was ejected from Sunday’s game late in the fourth quarter after he drew two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the same play.

One of those flags was for mouthing off to an official, who Evans said failed to throw a flag against a Panthers defender for what he considered illegal contact in the end zone.

“I thought it was an obvious pass interference, just like I always do,’’ Evans said. “He told me not to bring my (attitude) up in there, so I was upset about that. But I don’t think I did enough to get ejected. I’ve seen other people do a lot worse.’’

Evans finished the day catching four of the nine passes thrown his way for 99 yards. For the season, Evans had 74 catches for 1,206 yards and three touchdowns, despite missing the first game of the season with a hamstring injury.

A first-round draft pick in 2014, Evans finished with a combined 2,257 receiving yards for his first two NFL seasons — the seventh-highest total for any player through two years since the 1970 merger. He was feisty to the finish.

Evans drew a holding penalty Sunday from noted Panthers CB Josh Norman on one of the rare occasions Norman covered him. Evans and Norman finished the first half with an exchange of words.

“He’s a good player, but they don’t play man coverage,’’ Evans said. “It’s very, very rare they do that. The only time he did was when I got the holding call. But he’s a good player. He talks and gets in your head, but it is what it is.’’
