Staying grounded

For the second time in three weeks, Doug Martin and the Bucs displayed an effective running attack that chewed up yards and ate up clock. Martin gashed the Saints for 108 yards in 19 carries, including a 45-yard burst off left guard that set up a touchdown pass to Mike Evans. Rookie Charles Sims added a career-high 69 yards in 18 carries as the Bucs set season highs for rushing attempts (39) and rushing yards (183).

Two weeks ago, the Bucs ran for 151 yards at Carolina before the Packers limited them to only 16 yards on the ground last week. “We did some good stuff out there today — coming off the ball strong was a big point of emphasis all week,’’ said Demar Dotson, who switched from right tackle to left tackle for the final three weeks.

“We didn’t finish the game the way we wanted, but we gave our backs some opportunities. I know what kind of a back Doug is because I was here in 2012, when he ran for all those yards (1,454) as a rookie. If we had done a better job this year as an offensive line, Doug would have had a much better year.’’

Martin topped 100 yards for the first time since a 144-yard effort against New Orleans in Week 2 last season. He led the Bucs with 494 rushing yards this year, but averaged only 3.7 yards per carry, despite runs of 45 and 63 yards in the final three games. “It’s a bittersweet feeling,’’ Martin said of his final effort of 2014. “We wanted to end on a good note and win this last home game, but on the other side, it is nice to have the 100-yard game.’’
