Good job: Bucs looked like a team trying to lose
Tom Jones, The Tampa Bay Times, published 29 December 2014

Did the Bucs lose on purpose Sunday? It sure did look fishy.

A revolving door of backups played. The Bucs barely threw the ball in the second half. Mike Evans and Lavonte David, their two best active players, were shut down at halftime. Tampa Bay blew a 13-point fourth-quarter lead. And the offense's final drive featured a holding penalty and two sacks, including a safety.

If a team is trying to tank a game to get the first overall pick in the draft, that's how you draw it up. The Saints' total lack of interest in being on the field Sunday was the only reason the game was close.

You will never get coach Lovie Smith or anyone associated with the Bucs to admit they didn't try with all their might to win. In fact, Smith talked after the game that the plan all along was to get a good look at all of their players. But if Smith and the Bucs really did try to sabotage Sunday's game, you know what I say? Good job, fellas. For the first time all season, you did something right.

Who needs integrity when you can have the first pick? Seriously, the game's outcome was the best thing that could've happened to the Bucs. They are now on the clock and have the chance to take the best player in next spring's draft. "That's one consolation, I guess," Smith said. "I just know that we need to make improvements."

That improvement better start at quarterback. I don't want to hear about fielding trade offers. I don't want to hear about how you need help in all positions. I don't want to hear about how you need a left tackle or a pass rusher.

You are almost never in this position. You desperately need a quarterback. Most likely, you will have your choice between two good ones: Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston. Pick which one you like better and take him. Or else Sunday's tank job and this entire 2014 lost season will have been wasted.
