Dawsey sees Bucs catch on

Lawrence Dawsey didn't settle for just catching a team-high seven passes for 116 yards Sunday; he caught a glimpse of his past. "This is a great feeling," said Dawsey after Tampa Bay's 17-14 victory over Washington. "It feels like I'm in college again, at FSU, where you're expected to win. That's the great feeling that's around in the locker room."

When Dawsey looked around the locker room, he saw 45 other Buccaneers, all like himself never having experienced a four-game winning streak in Tampa Bay colors. "Guys aren't doubting themselves, and we're believing every time we get on the field," he said. "If we play to the best of our abilities, we can play with anybody. I wish we'd got on this roll earlier in the season. We could have made it to the big dance. Maybe next year."

The fourth-year receiver actually is having too much fun this season to look too far ahead. After missing the season's first six games recovering from last year's major knee surgery, Dawsey has crammed a decent season's worth of production into his nine games. With his totals against the Redskins, Dawsey now leads Tampa Bay in both receptions (42) and receiving yards (620). His 116 yards against Washington gave him his fourth career 100-yard day and his first since grabbing nine passes for 101 yards against the Bears in September 1993.

Dawsey's performance made him just the second Bucs receiver to reach the 100-yard mark this season, joining Charles Wilson, who caught four passes for 176 yards last week in a win over the Rams. "Lawrence is a tremendous player," Bucs coach Sam Wyche said. "He's one of the reasons we're winning now."

Dawsey set up both Tampa Bay's touchdowns. But it was a third-quarter bobble, one resulting in an interception by Washington cornerback Alan Grant, that had Dawsey talking afterward. The play killed a Bucs drive at the Redskins' 31 and kept Washington in command at 14-10. "I told Craig (Erickson) I owed him dinner for that, because that was my interception," Dawsey said. "It hit me dead in my chest. I just didn't look the ball all the way in. So I was glad I could come back and help the team get a touchdown. I'm just thankful for the win."

Said Erickson: "He makes so many great plays for me. He's allowed to slip up once in a while."

With Rhett having run for 192 yards against Washington two weeks ago, the Redskins put eight men at the line of scrimmage and dared Tampa Bay to run. The Bucs tried, but failed, and eventually opted for the man they call L.D. "They brought everybody up to try to stop the run," Dawsey said. "It was a great challenge for the passing game. That opens it up for the wideouts. Last week Charles Wilson had a great game and this week I had a pretty decent game. Any time you see guys trying to stop the run, we know the game is going to be decided by the wide receivers."
