For John McKay: Would you have thought the Bucs would win by holding San Diego to 24 points?
We thought we could hold them to less than that.
Again for McKay: Any regrets on calling the pass to Jimmie Giles that was intercepted?
He had the ball in his hands.
Once more for McKay: Should Doug Williams have thrown downfield more on the last series?
Not when the receivers aren't down there.
For Bucs linebacker Richard Wood: How did Dan Fouts compare to the other quarterbacks you've faced this year?
The best. He didn't overthrow anybody'. He didn't underthrow anybody.
Again for Wood: Will winning at Detroit be a challenge?
We know they haven't lost at home. The crowd's gonna be for them. They get as loud as our people, and they have a dome on their stadium that keeps the nose in. It'll be a wing-dinger.
For Bucs defensive end Dave Stalls: Did the fourth-down pass with a yard to go on San Diego's last drive surprise the defense"
Not really. We know they have a 50-50 tendency to throw on short-yardage situations.
For Bucs nose tackle David Logan: Did the Tampa Bay defense do as well as could be expected on the Chargers' winning drive?
We made them earn it, but they got too many yards on us. We should have been able to make their field-goal kicker work at it by forcing him to try a lon- ger one than 29 yards.
For Bucs extra-point holder Larry Swider: What happened on the missed extra point?
The ball was down (in time). The only thing I can say is, Billy (Capece) missed it.
For Bucs running back James Owens: Did you disagree with the ruling that you fumbled?
I was under the impression the play was over with. There was no movement. Someone just got a hand in there and pulled the ball loose. I asked him (the official): Was I down? He said no.
Again for Owens: How do you feel about your first fumble of the year coming at such a crucial time?
I'm sore on that point. I've been pretty consistent this season. I'm sorry it had to happen then.
For Bucs' placekickerd3ill Capece: Explain your miss on the extra point in the fourth quarter.
I didn't see the snap, because my head was down. But the hold was fine and the kick was perfect. I hit it good. I'll take the blame.
For Bucs' safety Cedric Brown: How do you feel about going into Detroit, where the Lions haven't lost this year, in a must-win situation?
We have to win. That's the bottom line. There's a first time for everything, and we aren't thinking about the Lions not having lost there. We're going up there to win.
Again for Brown: Had you known you would hold San Diego to just 24 points, would you have thought you would win the game?
You can't feel good about giving up 24 points. San Diego completed too many passes that hurt us. They accumulated too much yardage. When you give up 24 points, you make your offense work too hard.
For Bucs' linebacker David Lewis: How did it feel coming up with a key interception on your first play in several games?
I was glad to get to play, although Andy Hawkins has been doing a good job. I have to earn my way back in the lineup. When he came out, Andy told me that (Dan) Fouts usually looked in the direction he throws. So when I saw him looking to his right, I just kept fading over. He was trying to get it over my head, but he didn't.
For tight end Jimmie Giles: Did Glen Ed- wards just knock you loose from the ball on your interception?
Yes. I had the ball and just as I turned he hit me and the ball popped up in the air. It was the second most vicious hit I've ever had, and it was un- expected.
For quarterback Doug Williams: Explain why the offense seemed so calm in the fourth quarter when the Bucs were down 21-10.
If you're going to be a contending team, you can't get in a hurry, especially with that much time left. When you're on the sidelines, you don't just sit there. You hope the defense holds, and you talk about things you can do to score when you get the ball again.
Again for Williams: What was the play that Theo Bell turned into a 58-yard touchdown?
It was just a quick-out. We called the audible at the line of scrimmage. Theo just made a great move and got around his man.
For wide receiver Theo Bell: Explain how you go by your man (Allan Ellis) for such a long gainer.
They were in man-to-man coverage, and he came up to me on the outside. Most cornerbacks will come at you head-on. I had enough time to turn, and he would have had to make a real good tackle to stop me. Once I got by him, there was nobody else there.
For Bucs wide receiver Theo Bell: Will you rerun the 58-yard touchdown pass from Doug Williams?
I used to do those kind of things, so I felt like a 15-year-old again. San Diego was in single coverage. Doug called an audible. He (cornerback Allan Ellis) made a mistake and covered me to the outside. I turned around - and when the defensive back's eyes get real big, you know he's in trouble.
For Bucs running back Ricky Bell: How did it feel to start the game, run a few plays, hear some boos and then be replaced by James Owens?
I didn't have time to get started, to get the feel of the defense.
