Doug Martin might have been the Tampa Bay running back in the spotlight entering Sunday’s matchup against the Bears, but it was backfield mate Charles Sims who made things happen for the home team.
The second-year back ran four times for 45 yards, including a 29-yard dash, and added three catches for 72 yards, highlighted by a 50-yard touchdown reception that gave the Bucs a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter.
It was the second game this season that Sims topped 100 yards from scrimmage, and he has 1,001 total yards for the year. He and Martin are the first pair of Bucs backs to each surpass 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the same season since Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn in 1999.
“We’ve just got to finish,’’ said Sims, whose 42 receptions on the season rank second on the team to Mike Evans (70). “That’s the main thing we’re missing ... we’re not finishing.’’
On Tampa Bay’s opening possession of the second half, QB Jameis Winston faced second-and-5 from midfield. He bought time by rolling to his left, then pulled up just before crossing the 50. He found Sims streaking down the left sideline as veteran CB Tracy Porter arrived a split-second too late to make a diving deflection. “Jameis did a great job of scrambling and finding me on that touchdown,” Sims said.
By reaching the end zone, Sims became the first running back in the 40-year history of the franchise to record four touchdown receptions in a single season.
