Despite great season, Bucs' rookies have higher goals

LeGarrette Blount and Mike Williams still believe they have something to prove after Sunday's 38-15 victory against Seattle.

It does not matter to Williams that he set a rookie franchise record by adding his 10th touchdown reception this season. Blount has a chance to become the first rookie to rush for more than 1,000 yards since Cadillac Williams in 2005, but jumps over "arrival" talk like opposing tacklers.

Blount and Williams might be rookie sensations, but in their minds, they have not accomplished enough. "We're just determined," Blount said. "We're young guys, and we're determined to make ourselves known in this league, make a name for ourselves. With him being a draft pick and me being a free agent, I have a lot more to prove.

"He's definitely made his mark. He's definitely known for making big plays. He's leading all rookies in receiving. He's definitely pleading his case, and I'm still trying to plead mine."

Williams has a strong case to be known as one of the best rookies this season. He caught two touchdown passes against Seattle and currently has 924 yards this year. Williams tied Joey Galloway's season franchise record for most receiving touchdowns in team history (10 in 2005) and is tied with Cadillac Williams for the third-most rushing touchdowns by a rookie (six). Errict Rhett and Lars Tate share the scoring record with seven.

"We always tell each other that we have the best rookie class and we want to keep going out each week and proving it," Williams said. "That's our goal. If you don't make the play, I'm going to make the play. If I don't make the play, he's going to make the play, but we want to perform and we want to be involved in this winning season."

Tampa Bay's winning season might not have been possible without Blount. Despite having only six NFL starts, Blount has rushed for 941 yards and six touchdowns as an undrafted free agent. He leads all rookie running backs in rushing yards and has the fourth most rushing yards by a rookie in team history.

"I'm trying to make the biggest impression of anybody in the league that I can possibly make," Blount said.

Blount left another embarrassing mark on an opponent, leaping over Seattle safety Lawyer Milloy during a 48-yard run, and has raised the expectation levels of his teammates.

"Man, I wish I could do that still," Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow said. "I don't even think he knows what he's doing yet. That's what's so amazing about him. I can't wait until he really gets it because he's unstoppable."

Blount and Williams are getting stronger as the season progresses. They have accomplished more than expected so far. Just not enough in their minds.

"I'm good with my first year," Williams said. "I hope all the other teams still think I'm a rookie and play me like a rookie, but next year, I won't be a rookie. I'm still a rookie, I'm still out there and I'm just learning real quickly."
