Although he didn’t win on the scoreboard Sunday, Jameis Winston continues to win over hearts and minds in the Tampa Bay locker room. The first overall pick in the NFL draft continued to display rare poise for a rookie quarterback as Winston stretched his streak without a turnover to four consecutive games in a 32-18 setback against the Giants.
“We’re going to go as far as Jameis Winston takes us,’’ veteran TE Brandon Myers said. “He’s doing all he can. We just have to go out and make some plays for him. The kid’s a gamer.’’
Winston threw for 249 yards and scored Tampa Bay’s only touchdown on a dynamic 10-yard run in the fourth quarter that pulled the Bucs to within 20-18
Since throwing four interceptions against Carolina on Oct. 4, Winston has attempted 122 passes without being intercepted.
The Bucs converted six of 13 on third down against New York, but continually bogged down in the red zone, settling for one touchdown and three Connor Barth field goals in four trips inside the Giants’ 20-yard line.
“Offensively, we didn’t get it done, but that had nothing to do with Jameis Winston,’’ veteran guard Logan Mankins said. “We could have blocked better, we could have caught the ball better. Jameis played great ... the rest of us should have done a better job. Problems in the red zone have hurt us all year — and it really caught up with us today. Getting seven points instead of three is so big, especially against a team with an offense like the Giants.’’
One of the knocks on Winston coming out of Florida State was a supposed lack of mobility. Instead, he has run for three touchdowns midway through his rookie season and Sunday’s scoring dash was highlighted by a leap over the right pylon, with Winston stretching the final three yards while airborne. After the game, Winston was asked whether he felt like Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, who is a noted threat with his legs.
“I’m always going to feel like myself,’’ said Winston. “Cam Newton is a beast, so running-wise, I’ll never be able to compare myself to him. But pure want-to ... one thing that Cam has is heart. I believe that I have a lot of heart and I can battle with anybody when it comes to heart.”
