For Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., Sunday’s game could not have started more poorly. On the first play from scrimmage, Eli Manning’s pass was slightly behind Beckham, who juggled it … right into the waiting arms of Bucs cornerback Sterling Moore for an interception. Things got better for Beckham.
And much worse for the Bucs’ secondary.
Beckham finished with nine receptions for 105 yards. He didn’t make eye-popping big plays, but he was the team’s consistent target when a catch was needed in New York’s 32-18 victory against the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium.
Included were a pair of critical receptions — a 24-yarder on first down after the Bucs had cut it to 20-18 in the fourth quarter, then a fingertip 9-yard reception on third-and-6 on a drive that put New York up 26-18. “Just doing what I do,’’ Beckham said. “Make some plays, get on the bus and go home.’’
“Obviously, he is a really good player,’’ Bucs cornerback Alterraun Verner said. “I thought we broke some things up at times, but he definitely helped them with big catches.’’
Beckham, whose strong hands are legendary, won’t make the all-time highlight reel based on Sunday’s play. But Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Beckham has matured into one of the league’s most dependable targets. “He made a heck of a play on the sideline (9-yarder to get a first down),’’ Coughlin said. “He helped us a lot.’’
