The Bucs were short a couple of starting defensive backs against the Ravens, and it showed. With safety Dashon Goldson (ankle) and cornerback Johnthan Banks (neck) on the sideline, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco sliced up Tampa Bay’s secondary with regularity. Flacco threw five touchdown passes in just over 16 minutes and appeared poised to break the NFL’s single-game record of seven scoring passes, shared by seven quarterbacks.
“It seemed like we couldn’t make a play to get off the field or do anything,’’ said corner Alterraun Verner, who was burned on Flacco’s 56-yard scoring pass to Steve Smith Sr. that put Baltimore ahead 35-0 early in the second quarter. “They ran the ball, they threw the ball ... Flacco could do anything he wanted.’’
A weak pass rush didn’t help a defensive backfield that started Verner, Mark Barron and backups Major Wright and Crezdon Butler. Torrey Smith caught a pair of touchdown passes within the first six minutes, burning the Bucs often with slants over the middle.
“The timing was really good,’’ said coach Jim Harbaugh, now 30-1 when the Ravens score at least 30 points. “The receivers were running precise routes and it showed in the fact that the guys were getting open. Our offensive coaches did an excellent job of game planning. I think our timing just got them a little bit. This is not indicative of what you’re going to see from the Bucs this season.’’
