Look into the eyes of Vinny Testaverde after he throws his third interception in a game this season, and you see what? Fear? Despair? A quarterback beyond repair?
"(He) never blinked," Sam Wyche said. "I kept going over there and giving him the `You've got no sympathy from me on this one' kind of a look, without taking away the support a player has to have from his coach. But you've got to stay tough, and yet in their corner. Vinny responded to it."
Testaverde overcame three interceptions to drive the Bucs 80 yards in 14 plays, lofting a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ron Hall with 49 seconds left to lead Tampa Bay past Detroit 27-23. According to linebacker Broderick Thomas, the difference in Testaverde this season is that Wyche has shown confidence in his maligned quarterback.
"The difference is, (former Bucs coach Ray) Perkins used to yell at him, `You sonofathis and you sonofathat, and you mother this,' " Thomas said. "It was unbelievable. You have to remember how he's been treated. They've treated him like he was a dog with mange."
Instead of taking the collar, Testaverde hit 5 of 6 passes for 56 yards on the winning drive.
"The 11 guys out there said we were going in," Hall said. "We'd been in this position so many times in the past that we decided it's time to turn this thing around and prove to ourselves and the people that we're going to be a good football team."
Testaverde had help. Receivers Mark Carrier and Lawrence Dawsey caught three of his passes. Running back Reggie Cobb, who led the Bucs with 26 carries for 107 yards and a TD, rushed twice for 11 yards. Gary Anderson caught a pass and ran six times for 19 yards, including a first down at the Detroit 14-yard line.
With the Lions looking for another run, Testaverde used a play-action fake to Anderson before hitting Hall for a touchdown.
"We were very confident," Testaverde said. "We had some great calls and some great efforts by people to make it work. Just the last play was something special for me, anyway, to throw three interceptions and come back and throw a touchdown pass."
