Bucshotz Tom Jones, The St.Petersburg Times, published 29 September 2008 The broadcast The Fox team of Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston and end zone reporter Tony Siragusa turned in a surprisingly strong performance — surprising because of Siragusa. Albert and Johnston are always solid, but Siragusa typically is the anchor that weighs this team down. But he seems to have dropped his "character" — the big, goofy oaf who yells and spits, bumbles and stumbles and tries to imitate John Madden. Siragusa sounds more reserved these days and, because of it, actually has some good things to say, like when he pointed out how Packers RB Ryan Grant missed a cutback run that would've gained a first down. That's what a good end zone reporter does, and that's what Siragusa did Sunday. Overall, a good day for Fox. Best Moose Fox's Daryl Johnston ripped off a couple of good lines. One was noticing the jersey worn by Bucs DT Chris Hovan, which barely covered his chest. "Better watch that jersey," Johnston said. "You're going to have a wardrobe malfunction." Another was when a couple of defensive backs got mixed up in some shoving among the linemen. "They're swimming in the deep end of the pool there," Johnston said. "They need to stay in the shallow end." Worst hands Man, oh man, Michael Clayton just can't catch a break … or some footballs thrown at him. Another drop Sunday, and he was a victim of circumstance on the interception that bounced off his hands. It was a poor throw by QB Brian Griese, and only because Clayton was able to get a hand on it did it result in an interception. Poor guy. You know fans and coaches were probably shaking their heads and cursing him, and it really wasn't his fault. But based on all his drops in the past, he has used up a lot of folks' benefit of the doubt. Best comeback After Ronde Barber fell down and was burned on Green Bay's first touchdown, one couldn't help but think, "Oh, here we go again." Last week, Barber was repeatedly torched by the Bears. But give Barber credit. Do you remember him giving up another catch of importance Sunday? That's why the guy is headed to the Hall of Fame. Best comeback, part II Speaking of Hall of Famers, Derrick Brooks is something else, isn't he? Just when you're about to give up on him, pat him on the back and say, "Nice career, partner," he turns in another performance of impact. He picked off one pass, nearly had two more interceptions and caused the fumble on the Jermaine Phillips' touchdown. Certainly he is a lot closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but every now and then he proves that he still has gas in the tank. Most emotional moments How touching was it to see Matt Bryant, sending kisses to the sky after each of his field goals Sunday? Bryant's 3-month-old son, Tryson, died Wednesday. "I can't even imagine being in the position he is now," Fox's Daryl Johnston said after Bryant's first field goal. Fox handled the tragedy well. It mentioned it but didn't exploit it. But we could have done without Johnston using the cliche of Bryant playing well as being a story Hollywood would turn down because it's too improbable. It's hard to fault Johnston because finding the appropriate words to describe what Bryant and his family have gone through is impossible. Johnston was just trying to say the right thing. But that's one time it probably would've been best to say nothing. Worst penalty This is something that bugs me, and it happened Sunday, so here's a chance to complain. Green Bay CB Will Blackmon was penalized for a personal foul for an illegal block. Because it happened inside the Green Bay 30, it was a half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalty. I've always wondered: Why? If it's a personal foul, it should be 15 yards. If a defender is on his own 20 and he is called for a face mask, move the ball to the 5. If you're on offense and commit a personal foul on your own 25, push it back to the 10. If the foul takes place inside the 15, move the ball to the 1. A personal foul should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Worst play What in the heck is going on with Bucs players lateraling the ball after making an interception? Derrick Brooks did it Sunday, pitching a ball to fellow LB Cato June after a pick. Haven't we seen enough bad things happen with that? DE Gaines Adams did it the smart way. He made a pick and looked for a soft spot in the grass to lie down. Just a thought Doesn't it seem like every time Bucs RB Warrick Dunn touches the ball, something positive happens? Best returns Hey, Dexter Jackson, welcome to the NFL. The Bucs' second-round pick looked like a real kick returner for the first time. He abandoned the east-west routine and went the tried-and-true north-south tactic. The result was a 33.3-yard average on kick returns, including a 45-yarder, and one punt return for 19 yards. Best call Gutsy call by Jon Gruden to go for it on a fourth and 1 near the 20-yard line with a little more than two minutes left in the first half. The Bucs made it but ended up kicking a field goal anyway when QB Brian Griese turned into Chris Simms and had two passes batted down at the line of scrimmage.
