Since his return to the team during training camp, backup LT Todd Steussie has been an injury away from returning to the starting lineup. That injury occurred to Anthony Davis on the last play of the second quarter. Steussie, who was cut by the Bucs before the start training camp and later was brought back, stepped in and played the entire second half. QB Brian Griese was sacked three times in the first half, but none in the second half. "I just tried to stay calm and do my job and try not to have any let-off," Steussie said. "I'm just happy that we won."
Davis suffered a left shoulder sprain after Detroit CB R.W. McQuarters intercepted a Griese pass intended for FB Mike Alstott. Davis stayed on the ground for several minutes before he was helped up. He walked off the field on his own. "I got blasted," Davis said. "I don't know who hit me, but it was a good hit. It was a great hit. It's something I would do to somebody."
Davis wasn't the only starter to go down. RB Cadillac Williams' left hamstring tightened up on him in the third quarter. WR Joey Galloway also missed playing time in the second half. He was carted into locker room with leg cramps at the end of the third quarter after catching a 6-yard pass for a first down. Mark Jones took some snaps at receiver in Galloway's absence. Galloway returned later in the game. WR Michael Clayton missed some playing time with a shoulder bruise.
Not so special
Detroit return specialist Eddie Drummond didn't provide much help in terms of field position. Entering the game ranked fifth in the NFC with a 23.5 kickoff-return average, Drummond was limited to 26 yards on two kickoffs. He averaged only 5.7 yards on three punts. "Our coverage team took him out of the game," LB Derrick Brooks said. "That was so big for us defensively. They had to drive, very much, the length of the field to score against us every time they got the ball and teams normally don't do that."
Joey's big day
Joey Galloway’s 80-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter was the second-longest reception of his career. He had an 81-yard touchdown catch against San Diego on Oct. 25, 1998, when he was still with his first team, the Seattle Seahawks. The play also tied for the sixth-longest completion in Buccaneer history and the longest since 1992. It was also Griese’s longest completion as a Buccaneer.
Ronde's record
CB Ronde Barber’s sack of QB Joey Harrington in the third quarter put him on the verge of a remarkable career achievement. It was his 19th career sack and, coupled with his 23 interceptions, it left him one sack shy of being the first cornerback in NFL history to have 20 picks and 20 sacks. Barber has had at least one sack in each of the last eight seasons.
Home sweet home
The Buccaneers have won their first two home games of the season for the first time since Raymond James Stadium’s inaugural season. The Bucs’ last 2-0 start at home was in 1998, when they beat Chicago, 27-15, in Week Three and the N.Y. Giants, 20-3, in Week Five. In both 2003 and 2004, the Bucs lost their first two home games of the year.
Fast start
The Buccaneers’ 4-0 start is not only the third best in team history, following 5-0 beginnings in 1979 and 1997, it is the team’s longest winning streak since a four-game run of victories in the middle of 2002 (Oct. 27 – Nov. 24)
Tricky kicks
The Bucs don’t try too much trickery on special teams under Jon Gruden, but they took a stab at it early in Sunday’s game, to no avail. Kicking off after the Bucs’ game-opening field goal, Matt Bryant pooched a short kick between the first two lines of the Lions’ return unit. DE Jared DeVries kept the strategy from working by controlling the ball at the Lions’ 38.
Injury update
Cadillac Williams missed most of the second half with a hamstring injury. Shelton Quarles sustained a sprained left wrist in the first quarter but it did not force him to miss any time. The same was true of Jermaine Phillips, who suffered a sprained right thumb in the second quarter. Anthony Davis suffered a left shoulder injury on the last play of the first half and did not play in the second half.
