Cadillac Williams won't be hearing from Canton this week, but he may be hearing plenty from Bucs trainer Todd Toriscelli. Tampa Bay's gifted rookie entered Sunday's game as the NFL's rushing leader with 434 yards. He hobbled out on a strained hamstring and a sore arch after the Lions limited Williams to only 13 yards in 11 carries.
"Sometimes you're not going to be able to run the ball," right tackle Kenyatta Walker said after Tampa Bay's 17-13 victory. "They're gearing up to stop the run with Cadillac and we knew it was coming."
Williams had been averaging 4.9 yards on a league-high 88 carries and he opened with a 12-yard gain off left tackle on Tampa Bay's first possession. But with massive defensive tackles Shaun Rogers and Dan Wilkinson clogging the running lanes and strong safety Kenoy Kennedy adding support in the box, Williams added only 1 yard on his next 10 carries before leaving for good in the third quarter with a sore left hamstring. "I felt something tweak," said Williams, who caught two passes for 6 yards. "Those were tough yards. Every Sunday won't be perfect. You can't go there and break records and you have to accept the good with the bad."
Williams walked off the field gingerly, but Bucs coach Jon Gruden wasn't overly concerned. "Everything is OK," Gruden said. "He has a mild hamstring, and having missed a number of practices and the fact that Pittman was playing pretty well, we chose to go another route."
The Lions were gashed for 187 yards on the ground in a 38-6 setback at Chicago before a bye week gave the coaching staff extra time to prepare for Williams.
"We felt like we came down here to play a physical football game and gave him nowhere to run," Lions linebacker Boss Bailey said. "We brought 11 guys on him every time."
The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, already has Williams' gloves and cleats on display after the fifth pick in the draft set two rookie rushing marks last week in Green Bay. Williams has been limited in practice because of an arch injury suffered against Buffalo in Week 2. Sunday's hamstring problem provided a welcome opportunity for Michael Pittman, who had only one carry against the Packers.
"It's a long season and he Pittman knows he will get his chances," said Williams, who attempted to cajole the coaching staff into allowing him to return. I wanted to, but I couldn't force my will on them," Williams said. "They said if I pulled my hamstring, that could delay things a long, long time. They weren't taking that chance."
