At 3-0 the Bucs are off to one of the fastest starts in team history. One reason is the way they're finishing games. Just as they did in the opener at Minnesota, the Bucs put together a strong finish in beating the Packers 17-16 at Lambeau Field on Sunday. The defense, which struggled to close out games a year ago, allowed one fourth-quarter score this time, but that was a field goal sandwiched between a pair of Will Allen interceptions.
The offense, meanwhile, got another strong effort late in the game from rookie running back Cadillac Williams. After running for 71 yards and a touchdown to close out the victory against the Vikings, he amassed 79 yards in the fourth quarter against the Packers. "He does seem to get stronger as the game goes on," Coach Jon Gruden said of Williams, who ran 37 times for 158 yards during his first visit to Lambeau Field.
The late-game performance the Bucs got from Williams and the rest of the offense is one they had a feeling they would get shortly after they assembled for their lone minicamp in June.
"They're finding ways to make plays," linebacker Derrick Brooks said. "It's been that way since minicamp. We knew then that if these guys could make some plays on us, they could make plays on other teams. And that's what they're doing. They know that we're going to give them the ball and they know that if we keep giving them shots at another team, they're going to break one eventually."
Williams broke free for a 26-yard run early in the fourth quarter and a 24-yard run just before the two-minute warning. Both helped crush the Packers' chances of a comeback. Nothing crushed them more, though, than the play of Allen, who came into the game in the first half after starting free safety Dexter Jackson went down with a hamstring injury. Allen picked off one Brett Favre pass early in the quarter, then followed up by picking off another late in the game. "It just shows what tremendous depth we have," Brian Kelly said of Allen's contribution. "And we have it on offense and defense. I think we showed that today. We were well prepared for them today."
And it showed -- right on through to the end.
