Jacquies Smith showing explosiveness in disrupting QBs

It’s beginning to look like Jacquies Smith was just getting started last year. Claimed off waivers from Buffalo just after the 2014 season opener, Smith made seven starts for the Bucs at defensive end and registered 6.5 sacks. He’s been even more disruptive this year with four sacks in two games, taking down New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees three times in Sunday’s 26-19 triumph.

“Jacquies played great,’’ Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. “I told him all week long that I was going to push the pocket and he needs to stay ready on the edge. He got a bunch of one-on-one blocking and he won them all day.’’

Working against veteran right tackle Zach Strief, Smith used his impressive burst to hound Brees much of the afternoon. Two of his sacks caused fumbles by Brees as Smith became the first Buc with at least two sacks and two forced fumbles in the same game since Stylez G. White at Houston in 2007.

After one of Smith’s hits, Brees seemed to flex his shoulder uncomfortably. Afterward, a few of his downfield throws wobbled. “I’d say it affected me on a few of the throws down the field,” Brees said. “They just didn’t come out very well.”

Smith also was credited with a tackle for loss and two quarterback hits. “You want to get in Brees’ face and make him uncomfortable,’’ Smith said. “I thought our rush and coverage worked great together today. Our defensive backs did a good job of staying close and making Brees think twice. That gave us the time to get to him.’’

After only two weeks, Smith is 40 percent of the way toward the first double-digit sack season by a Tampa Bay player since Simeon Rice in 2005. “We got Brees off his spot today,’’ Bucs defensive line coach Joe Cullen said. “And Jacquies Smith did a heck of a job. Four sacks in two games isn’t too shabby, but everybody up front did their part.”
