They started on the opening kickoff when Earnest Graham was called for a personal foul. They continued to come, one after another, on the Buccaneers' first series. First it was Juran Bolden with an illegal touch as he downed a punt after running out of bounds. Then it was Dewayne White with a false start on the next play. That was followed by an ineligible player (White again) downfield as Josh Bidwell attempted his third consecutive punt.
Penalties. And lots of 'em. Through the first two weeks of the season, one of the few negatives the Bucs can point to is their inordinate number of yellow flags. Twenty-six times they've been flagged for a total of 198 yards, including 13 times for 99 yards Sunday against Buffalo. The Bills, by comparison, committed three penalties for 20 yards. "Penalties are something that sometimes happen," tackle Kenyatta Walker said. "We've just got to look at the tape and get better with it. We just have to get better."
Sunday's calls ran the gamut from offside and holding to an illegal pick by receiver Michael Clayton and Jermaine Phillips being whistled for a facemask. The most common cause for penalties, players said, is lack of focus. But they insist that's easily fixed. "We just have to keep playing and play smart," Phillips said. "I know a couple of those were my fault (Sunday) but you've got to keep playing smart and work on them every week. Fortunately, we got ... a W and it didn't cost us."
